Northern Pacific Railroad began developing this Tacoma yard in the 1890s, establishing a turntable, roundhouse, machine shop, maintenance shops, oil houses, fuel tanks, and storage facilities for engine maintenance, freight car repair, and rail cargo operations. Groundwater investigations have identified petroleum products, non-halogenated solvents, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) at the property — contamination consistent with a century of heavy industrial railroad use. The site is designated under Washington's Standard Cleanup program and is currently awaiting cleanup. That history could support an insurance cost recovery claim against carriers who issued insurance policies 40+ years ago.
Why Historical Insurance Policies May Be Accessible
