Frontier Leather Company operated a leather tannery at this property from 1947 to 1988, with sedimentation lagoons constructed in the mid-1960s to manage process waste — lagoon sediments have shown chromium concentrations as high as 39,677 ppm. A 1985 breach of the lagoons drained contaminated material into Rock Creek, and subsequent sampling has confirmed metals contamination in soil, sediment, groundwater, and surface water, with chromium accumulation documented in fish tissue. A 2004 Feasibility Study estimated an approximately $2 million remedy, but cleanup has never been implemented due to lack of funding, and PFAS was newly identified as a chemical of interest at the site in 2025.
